Dears members,

I'm a cobia manager hatchery for 3 years in Brazil, where we heve producing allot of cobia fingerlings, but now we are having some problems with eggs fertilize, our brood are F1 generation, so I'm in doubt if it could be nutriotion or because temperture has been in 25º. If someone can help me to some advise or sugestion, please, I will be very tankful.

Another problem is about cobia larval rearing disease, in our last run of larval rearing, allot of cobia larvae at 10 DPH start with a floated belly and spiral swim in ther surfase, the mortality was gradually and after fins become to be red, I think taht it should be bacterial infestation, does someone knows how to treat larvae with especific antibiotic?

Best Regards for all

We have a number of articles on cobia in recent issues of Aquaculture Asia Magazine, you might want to browse the publication section and see if there's anything to help you. I think we have one more in the pipeline as well.

Regarding antibiotics, frankly this is best avoided. If you are having disease problems with the larvae then you need to try and improve the larval rearing / hatchery management practices. Quite likely there is some underlying problem that needs to be addressed, and antibiotics won't help with that.

Hi Ronaldo,

best temperatuge range for coboa larvae rearing is 27-28C. I don't recommend temperature over 29-30 or under 25C. ANyway, temperature shall be kept as stable as possiblt during all the trial.
Salinity shall also be kept stable, max 32-35, optimal around 25.
i Believ you can find on the net some updated review on cobia larviculture from US teams in Virginia tech institute. ALso try to get hand on first cobia aquaculture book edited by WAS in 2007.

Ragrsd and good luck
Frederic

Hi Frederic,

unfortunatelly is very dificult to us keep temperature suitable, but It is our major point to investigate laral rearing problems in the winter, where our temperature vary between 25 to 28ºC during the day, I think, It should make our larvae more susceptible to disease, in especilly bacterial disease.

We have produced aloot of cobia fingerlings in summer, with 25% of survival, but in the winter we are finding allot of problems to disease.

If someone knows how to prevent bacterial disease in larval rearing tank without antibiotic treatment, please, report it.

Thak you Frederic for your explanation.

Best Regards
