Regional reference Laboratories

The third resource level in the NACA regional resource base initiative is Regional Reference Laboratories (RRL) for diseases of regional concern, not listed by the OIE. These laboratories would (a) function as centres of expertise and standardisation for designated diseases (b) store and distribute biological reference products and any other reagents used in the diagnosis and control of the designated diseases (c) develop new procedures for diagnosis and control of the designated diseases and (d) gather, process, analyse and disseminate epidemiological data relevant to their speciality.

NACA Regional Reference Laboratory for Koi herpes virus Disease and White tail Disease

Prior to listing of KHVD and WTD by the OIE, these two diseases were included for reporting in the Asia-Pacific QAAD reporting system. To support countries participating in QAAD reporting, NACA had identified AAHL Fish Diseases Laboratory (AFDL), Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL), CSIRO Livestock Industries Private Mail Bag 24, Geelong, Victoria 3220, AUSTRALIA as a NACA Regional Reference Laboratory for Koi herpes virus disease in June 2005 and the Aquatic Animal Disease Laboratory, C. Abdul Hakeem College, Aquaculture Division, Department of Zoology, Tamil Nadu, INDIA as a NACA Regional Reference Laboratory for White tail disease in November 2006.

Following the listing of KHVD by the OIE, the OIE has recognized two laboratories as OIE Reference Laboratories for KHVD. They are the Fisheries Research Agency, Research Promotion & Development Department, Yokohama, Japan, with Dr Motohiko Sano as the expert, and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), Weymouth, UK, with Dr Keith Way as the expert.

Following the listing of WTD by the OIE, the OIE has recognized one laboratory as OIE Reference Laboratory for WTD, i.e. Aquatic Animal Disease Laboratory, C.Abdul Hakeem College, Aquaculture Division, Department of Zoology, Tamil Nadu, INDIA, with Dr A.Sait Sahul Hameed as the expert.

Considering the identification of OIE Reference Laboratories for KHVD and WTD, the NACA RRLs would now be considered as NACA Regional Resource Centres. NACA welcomes expression of interest from aquatic animal health specialists and institutions in the region to participate in this 'regional resource base' initiative.
